Galatasaray Join Atletico Madrid in Race for Bruno Fernandes

Galatasaray are reportedly preparing to challenge Atletico Madrid for the signature of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. The Turkish champions could have an advantage in one key area: their ability to offer the Portuguese midfielder a lucrative financial package.

The Istanbul club considered signing Fernandes during the previous summer transfer window but did not reach an agreement. Now, they are weighing up whether to revive their interest and make a fresh attempt to bring him to Turkey. The prospect could appeal to the midfielder as he approaches a significant point in his United career.

Fernandes is 32 and has entered the final year of his current contract at Old Trafford. United have an option to extend the deal by a further season, however, meaning the club retain some influence over the timing and terms of any potential departure. A reported £57 million release clause discussed during the summer has expired, leaving no such clause to determine the next step.

United were reluctant to lose their captain in the previous transfer window and continue to regard him as an important part of the squad. Even so, the club’s position may depend on Fernandes’s own wishes. If he decides that a new challenge is right for him, United could be more open to negotiations than they were before.

Atletico Madrid remain interested, although there has reportedly been no formal move from Diego Simeone’s side so far. The Spanish club are considering a possible approach in the summer of 2027, when Fernandes’s contract situation could make negotiations more favourable. That timeline, however, may leave Atletico competing with Galatasaray if the Turkish side push for an earlier deal.

Fernandes would offer either team a rare combination of creativity, leadership and goals from midfield. His record at United underlines why he continues to attract attention: last season, he scored nine Premier League goals and provided 21 assists, setting a new single-season assists record in the competition.

He joined Manchester United from Sporting CP at the start of 2020 for a reported €55 million and quickly became a central figure. Since then, his responsibilities have extended beyond creating chances. As captain, he has also been expected to set the tone on the pitch and help guide the team through difficult spells.

For Galatasaray, signing Fernandes would represent a major addition to a squad that won the Turkish Super Lig title in the 2025/26 season. His experience and attacking output could strengthen the side for both domestic competition and European campaigns. A substantial salary offer may help the club make its case, but financial terms alone would not guarantee a transfer.

Atletico, by contrast, could appeal through the prospect of a new footballing environment in Spain and a role within Simeone’s side. The club’s longer-term planning may suit a summer 2027 move, but waiting carries a risk: Galatasaray could try to secure Fernandes sooner, before Atletico’s preferred window arrives.

The midfielder’s decision is likely to involve more than comparing wages or choosing a destination. Contract length, playing role, the club’s ambitions and the demands of a potential move would all matter. At this stage, there is no confirmed agreement with either side, and United’s contract option remains an important part of the picture.

For now, the situation hinges on whether Galatasaray turn their renewed interest into a formal approach and how Manchester United respond. Atletico Madrid remain in contention, but their apparent preference for a later move could give the Turkish champions an opportunity to act first. Fernandes’s next step will become clearer once his intentions and United’s plans for his contract are known.
