Tottenham Reject Galatasaray’s Opening Bid for Pape Matar Sarr
Galatasaray have made an approach for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, but their first offer has been turned down after failing to meet the Premier League club’s valuation. The Turkish champions are reportedly prepared to continue negotiations, while Sarr himself is increasingly receptive to the prospect of moving to Istanbul.
According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, talks regarding the Senegal international’s personal terms are progressing positively. However, an agreement between the two clubs remains some distance away. Galatasaray’s initial proposal was worth €18 million, while Tottenham are understood to be demanding a minimum of €25 million before considering a sale.
That gap in valuation has led Spurs to reject the opening bid. With the transfer window approaching its final weeks, Galatasaray must now decide whether to improve their offer or turn their attention to alternative midfield targets.
Sarr’s uneven Tottenham career
Sarr joined Tottenham from FC Metz in August 2021, but his early years in north London were defined by patience and limited opportunities. The midfielder was gradually introduced to senior football before establishing himself more convincingly during the 2023/24 campaign.
His progress was interrupted during the 2025/26 season. Fitness problems and inconsistent form reduced his involvement, and he made only 13 league starts. Even so, Sarr still produced two goals and four assists, showing that he can contribute in both defensive and attacking phases.
The 23-year-old remained a trusted option in the UEFA Champions League, where he started seven matches. His European involvement underlined his importance to the squad, although his long-term position at Tottenham has become less certain following a busy summer in the transfer market.
Increased competition at Spurs
Tottenham have strengthened their midfield by signing Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. At the same time, the club are keen to continue developing Lucas Bergvall, another young player competing for minutes in the centre of the pitch.
That combination could push Sarr further down the pecking order in the 2026/27 season. While the Senegalese midfielder offers energy, versatility and physical strength, Tottenham may consider a transfer if the right financial proposal arrives.
Sarr’s potential departure would not necessarily mean that the club has lost faith in his ability. Instead, it could reflect the intense competition for places and Tottenham’s desire to balance their squad while raising funds for further recruitment.
Why Galatasaray want Sarr
Galatasaray’s interest is understandable despite the depth of Okan Buruk’s midfield options. The club are assessing the future of Lucas Torreira, who has been linked with Fiorentina, while Mario Lemina and Ilkay Gundogan are both entering the later stages of their careers.
As a result, Galatasaray need to begin planning for the next generation of their midfield. Sarr would offer a younger alternative with experience at both club and international level. His ability to cover ground, win challenges and carry the ball forward could make him a suitable long-term addition to the Turkish side.
The midfielder’s profile also fits the demands of Galatasaray’s competitive schedule. The club regularly challenge for domestic honours and expect to participate in European football, meaning they require players who can cope with pressure and a high number of matches.
Other clubs monitoring the midfielder
Galatasaray are not the only club believed to be interested in Sarr. Aston Villa and Al-Ahli have also been mentioned as potential destinations, giving Tottenham several possible routes if they decide to sanction a transfer.
Competition from other suitors could work in Spurs’ favour. If more clubs enter the race, Tottenham may be able to maintain their €25 million asking price or negotiate additional bonuses and sell-on conditions. Galatasaray, meanwhile, will need to show that they are serious if they want to secure the deal.
For Sarr, the situation could provide an opportunity to restart his career in a new environment. Regular first-team football may be particularly attractive after a season in which injuries and inconsistent performances limited his influence.
What happens next?
The next stage of negotiations is likely to depend on Galatasaray’s willingness to raise their offer. Personal terms do not currently appear to be a major obstacle, but the Turkish club must narrow the €7 million difference between their initial proposal and Tottenham’s valuation.
A compromise could eventually be reached through performance-related add-ons, instalment payments or a future resale clause. Tottenham may also insist on retaining certain protections if they believe Sarr could increase in value over the next few seasons.
At this stage, a transfer is possible but far from guaranteed. Sarr is reportedly open to the move, and Galatasaray have identified him as a priority midfield option, yet Tottenham remain in control of the negotiations. Unless the Turkish champions return with a substantially improved bid, the Senegalese international could still begin the new campaign in north London.
The outcome will depend on whether Spurs view Sarr as a player worth retaining for squad depth or as an asset whose sale can help reshape the team.
