Rafael Leao reportedly favors Aston Villa over Galatasaray transfer
Rafael Leao is reportedly leaning towards a move to Aston Villa rather than joining Galatasaray this summer, despite the Turkish club’s efforts to reach an agreement with AC Milan for the Portuguese winger.
According to Portuguese publication *Record*, Galatasaray have identified Leao as a priority target while attempting to strengthen their attacking options before the transfer window closes. The Turkish Super Lig champions are looking for a versatile wide forward and view the 27-year-old as a potential replacement for Wilfried Zaha, who has departed as a free agent.
Recent reports indicate that Galatasaray had reached an agreement in principle over a deal for Leao. Their proposed package was believed to include a transfer fee of €45 million, while the player was offered a contract worth approximately €12 million per year.
However, Aston Villa’s interest has apparently changed the situation. The Premier League club has submitted a loan proposal that includes an €8 million loan fee and a mandatory purchase clause worth €42 million. The overall value of the agreement would therefore reach €50 million, exceeding Galatasaray’s initial offer.
Leao is also said to prefer a move to England. Although Aston Villa’s reported salary proposal of €6.5 million per year is lower than Galatasaray’s offer, the opportunity to play regularly in the Premier League appears to be a major factor in the winger’s decision.
Leao’s AC Milan career
Leao joined AC Milan from Lille in August 2019 and quickly established himself as one of the most exciting attacking players in Serie A. His acceleration, dribbling ability and ability to create chances from the left flank made him a key figure at San Siro.
Over the following seasons, the Portuguese international became central to Milan’s attacking strategy. His performances were closely connected to the club’s overall results, particularly during their successful periods in domestic competition.
The 2025/26 campaign, however, was less productive for both Leao and Milan. The winger scored 10 goals and provided three assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. Why Galatasaray want Leao
Galatasaray’s pursuit of Leao is understandable given the changes to their attacking group. Zaha’s departure has left the club without an experienced wide player capable of carrying the ball and creating danger in one-on-one situations.
There are also doubts surrounding Leroy Sane’s future in Istanbul. If Sane leaves, Galatasaray would need another high-profile attacker to maintain their level of quality on the flanks. Leao would offer a combination of speed, direct running and finishing that could significantly improve the Turkish side’s offensive threat.
The Portuguese winger would also bring valuable experience from elite European competition. His ability to operate from either wing or move into central areas could make him particularly useful in a system that relies on quick transitions and aggressive attacking play.
Villa’s need for another wide attacker
Aston Villa have already added Alejandro Garnacho during the summer, but manager Unai Emery may still believe that his squad requires greater depth and creativity in wide areas.
The departure of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea has created a gap in Villa’s attacking options. Rogers had become an important contributor in the final third, and replacing his production will be essential if the club wants to compete on several fronts.
