Rafael Leao Close to Galatasaray Move After Agreement in Principle with AC Milan
Rafael Leao is reportedly nearing a transfer to Galatasaray after the Turkish champions reached an agreement in principle with AC Milan for the Portuguese winger. The proposed deal is understood to be worth €45 million, while improved personal terms have helped convince the player to continue his career in Türkiye.
Although several details still need to be finalized, the move appears to be advancing rapidly. Galatasaray have reportedly secured AC Milan’s approval for the transfer, and Leao is said to have accepted the club’s proposal despite receiving interest from Aston Villa.
Galatasaray win the race for Leao
The Istanbul-based side identified Leao as one of their main attacking targets after Wilfried Zaha left as a free agent. Leroy Sane’s uncertain situation has also increased the need for another high-quality wide player, making the Milan forward an attractive solution.
Leao’s speed, ability to beat defenders and versatility across the front line would give Galatasaray an additional dimension in attack. He can operate from either wing, drift into central areas and create chances without relying solely on possession. His profile could allow him to replace some of the creativity and direct running previously provided by Zaha.
Galatasaray’s position as the 2025/26 Super Lig champions also appears to have played a role in the negotiations. The club has ambitious plans for the coming season and wants to build a squad capable of competing domestically while making an impact in European competition.
Aston Villa miss out on another attacking target
Aston Villa were also strongly interested in Leao. The Premier League club have been looking to improve their options on the wings and viewed the Portuguese international as a potential solution to their shortage of attacking depth.
Villa completed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho earlier in the summer, but their wide positions remain an area of concern. Morgan Rogers has moved to Chelsea, while Ollie Watkins is reportedly close to joining Al-Hilal. Those departures would leave Unai Emery’s team with a considerable loss of pace, creativity and goals in the final third.
Recent reports suggested that Villa made an offer to Leao and hoped to persuade him to move to England. However, Galatasaray’s improved proposal appears to have changed the situation. The player has reportedly chosen the Turkish club, leaving Aston Villa with little option but to search for alternative targets before the transfer window closes.
Leao’s AC Milan spell
Leao joined AC Milan from Lille in August 2019 and quickly established himself as one of the most exciting attackers in Serie A. His acceleration and close control made him a constant threat in one-on-one situations, while his ability to produce decisive moments helped him become a key figure at San Siro.
Over the course of seven seasons, his performances were closely linked to Milan’s overall results. When Leao was playing with confidence and consistency, the Rossoneri looked significantly more dangerous. His contribution was particularly important during Milan’s stronger campaigns, when the club challenged near the top of the Serie A table.
However, the 2025/26 season was less productive for both the player and the team. Leao scored 10 goals and registered three assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. Those figures were below expectations for a player of his quality, and Milan ultimately endured a disappointing campaign that ended with a fifth-place finish in Serie A.
Despite that decline, Leao’s reputation has remained strong. His age, experience at the highest level and outstanding physical qualities continue to make him one of the most attractive attacking players on the transfer market.
What Leao could bring to Galatasaray
Galatasaray need a winger who can stretch defensive lines and create space for central forwards. Leao is particularly effective when receiving the ball in wide areas before driving toward goal. His speed can force opposing full-backs to retreat, while his strength allows him to withstand physical challenges.
The Portuguese forward could also benefit from a change of environment. A move away from Milan may help him regain confidence and rediscover the consistency that made him one of Europe’s most dangerous wide attackers. Galatasaray’s attacking system could give him greater freedom to take risks and play closer to the opposition penalty area.
His arrival would also increase competition within the squad. Rather than depending on one or two established forwards, Galatasaray would have more options for changing the tempo of matches. Leao could start on the left, switch flanks during games or move inside when the team needs an additional goal threat.
Tactical significance of the transfer
Galatasaray’s interest in Leao is not simply about adding another recognizable name. The club appears to be targeting a player capable of changing matches through individual actions. Against compact opponents, his ability to carry the ball over long distances could become especially valuable.
The winger’s presence would also create more opportunities for overlapping full-backs and attacking midfielders. Defenders may be forced to double up against him, opening passing lanes for teammates. That could make Galatasaray less predictable and improve their ability to break down deep defensive blocks.
There will nevertheless be expectations attached to the transfer. A €45 million investment would make Leao one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history, and supporters will expect immediate production. He must adapt to a new league, new teammates and a different level of tactical pressure.
A major statement for the Turkish champions
If completed, the signing would represent an important statement of intent from Galatasaray. The club would be adding a player with extensive Champions League and international experience while strengthening its squad for another demanding season.
For AC Milan, the sale would bring a significant transfer fee and end a long relationship with one of the team’s most influential players. The Italian club will now need to reinvest wisely, particularly if it loses the attacking spark that Leao provided during his best periods.
For Aston Villa, the transfer is another setback in their attempt to rebuild the forward line. With several attacking changes already taking place, the club must move quickly to identify a replacement capable of contributing goals and creativity.
The agreement is still described as being in principle, meaning the final paperwork, medical examinations and contractual formalities remain to be completed. Nevertheless, Leao’s decision to accept Galatasaray’s improved terms suggests that the transfer is moving toward completion rather than remaining a speculative possibility.
