Galatasaray Abandon Bruno Fernandes Pursuit as Turkish Champions Turn to New Target
Galatasaray have reportedly ended their interest in Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes after identifying a younger alternative. The Turkish champions are now expected to focus on Lokomotiv Moscow midfielder Aleksey Batrakov, while Fernandes appears increasingly likely to continue his career at Old Trafford.
Manchester United rejected an enquiry from Galatasaray for the Portugal international, and Fernandes has made it clear that he would prefer to remain with the Premier League club. Negotiations over a new contract are already under way, with both parties discussing how to extend their current agreement.
Fernandes is currently tied to United until 2028, with the club holding an option to add another year. However, the 31-year-old wants a fresh four-year contract that would offer greater security and reflect his status as one of the team’s most influential players.
His position has remained consistent. Fernandes does not want to leave Manchester United and has already turned down interest from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, despite the possibility of receiving a highly lucrative financial package. His priority is to continue competing at the highest level in England and remain part of United’s rebuilding project.
Manchester United have strong reasons to retain Fernandes
United’s determination to keep their captain is understandable after an outstanding 2025/26 campaign. Fernandes was arguably the club’s most important player, recording 31 goal contributions in 37 appearances in all competitions.
The midfielder also set a new Premier League record for assists in a single season after producing 21 in the competition. Those numbers underline how heavily Manchester United rely on his creativity, passing range and ability to influence matches in the final third.
Fernandes joined United from Sporting CP in January 2020 for an initial fee of €55 million. Since then, he has become the central figure in the team’s attacking play and has made 327 appearances for the Red Devils, contributing 215 goals.
Although his age means that a long-term extension would represent a considerable commitment, his recent performances have strengthened the argument for keeping him at the heart of the squad. Fernandes remains the player most capable of creating chances, setting the tempo and producing decisive moments when United need inspiration.
Galatasaray switch attention to Aleksey Batrakov
With a move for Fernandes no longer considered a priority, Galatasaray have turned their attention to Aleksey Batrakov. The Russian attacking midfielder is expected to move to the Turkish club from Lokomotiv Moscow in a deal worth more than €30 million.
Batrakov represents a different type of investment from Fernandes. At a much younger age, he would offer Galatasaray the opportunity to build around a developing playmaker while also potentially securing an asset who could rise in value over the coming seasons.
The change in strategy may also reflect the financial and sporting challenges involved in signing an established Premier League captain. Fernandes would command a significant transfer fee, substantial wages and a long contract, whereas Batrakov could provide Galatasaray with greater flexibility.
For the Turkish champions, the decision is likely to be based not only on Fernandes’ quality but also on squad planning. A younger midfielder could fit more naturally into a long-term recruitment model and give the club a player capable of developing alongside its existing core.
Fernandes’ future at Old Trafford looks increasingly secure
The collapse of Galatasaray’s interest removes one possible complication from Manchester United’s negotiations. The club can now focus on reaching an agreement with Fernandes without the immediate pressure of a serious European alternative.
United already control his current contract, but the captain is seeking a new arrangement that better reflects his importance. A renewal would also send a strong message about the club’s ambitions, particularly during a period when supporters are looking for evidence of stability and progress.
Keeping Fernandes would preserve the team’s main creative outlet. His contribution is not limited to assists and goals: he leads from midfield, takes responsibility for set pieces, presses aggressively and regularly demands the ball in difficult situations.
His leadership could prove especially valuable for younger players. Fernandes has become one of the senior figures in the dressing room, and retaining him would give Manchester United a proven reference point while the club continues to reshape its squad.
A new contract could also help United avoid uncertainty during the transfer window. If Fernandes’ future is settled, the recruitment department can concentrate on strengthening other positions instead of searching for a replacement for their captain.
For Galatasaray, meanwhile, the pursuit of Batrakov signals a move towards a more sustainable alternative. The Russian midfielder may not provide the same immediate experience as Fernandes, but his arrival could offer long-term sporting and financial benefits.
At present, the situation is clear: Fernandes wants to stay, Manchester United want to keep him, and Galatasaray have shifted their attention elsewhere. Unless negotiations encounter an unexpected obstacle, the Portugal international is expected to remain one of the key figures in United’s plans for the years ahead.
